Question:

How do I download and install Oracle Net8 libraries in Windows 2000/XP?

Answer:

  1. Download the Oracle Net8 Installer (http://www.computing.vt.edu/software_and_hardware/windows/Net8.msi).
Caution: The Net8 libraries include a TNSNAMES.ORA file that is configured to point to the Virginia Tech Banner server. Installing this package could cause other Oracle applications you are using to stop working. If you think this might cause an application to stop working, contact your departmental network liaison, or contact 4Help by using the Help Request Form (http://www.computing.vt.edu/csc) or by calling (540) 231-HELP (4357).
  2. Save the file to your desktop.
  3. On your desktop, double-click the Net8 icon.
Note: By default, Net8 will install to C:\ORANT.
Note: You can use the Oracle Net8 libraries to extract bulk data against the Banner database using a client such as Excel or Access.
