To configure Windows XP to connect to the modem pool:

  1. Verify that your modem is installed:
    1. Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
    2. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
    3. Under See Also, click the Phone and Modem Options link.
    4. Select the Modems tab.
    5. In the The Following Modems Are Installed list, locate your modem.
      Note: If you do not have a modem installed, contact your computer's manufacturer for installation instructions.
    6. Click OK.
  2. Configure your modem pool connection:
    1. Click the Network Connections link.
    2. Under Network Tasks, click the Create a New Connection link.
    3. Click Next.
    4. Select the Connect to the Internet option.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Select the Set Up My Connection Manually option.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Select the Connect Using a Dial-up Modem option.
    9. Click Next.
    10. In the ISP Name text box, type: Virginia Tech Modem Pool
    11. Click Next.
    12. In the Phone Number text box, type: 2327000
    13. Click Next.
    14. Select the option for whom you want to create the connection.
    15. Click Next.
    16. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
    17. In the Password text box, type your PID password.
    18. In the Confirm Password text box, type your PID password.
    19. Clear the Use This Account Name and Password When Anyone Connects to the Internet from This Computer check box.
    20. Click Next.
    21. Place a check in the Add a Shortcut to This Connection to My Desktop check box.
    22. Click Finish.
    23. In the Connect Virginia Tech Modem Pool window, click Cancel.
  3. Configure TCP/IP:
    1. In the Network Connections window, right-click the Virginia Tech Modem Pool icon, and select Properties.
    2. Select the Networking tab.
    3. From the This Connection Uses the Following Items list, select Internet Protocol TCP/IP.
      Note: If Internet Protocol TCP/IP is not listed, you must install it:
      1. Click the Install button.
      2. From the Click the Type of Network Component You Want to Install list, select Protocol.
      3. Click the Add button.
      4. From the Network Protocol list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
      5. Click OK.
      6. To restart your computer, click the Yes button.
      7. After your computer has restarted, in the Network Connections window, right-click the Virginia Tech Modem Pool icon, and select Properties.
      8. Select the Networking tab.
      9. From the This Connection Uses the Following Items list, select Internet Protocol TCP/IP.
    4. Click the Properties button.
    5. Select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.
    6. Click the Advanced button.
    7. Select the DNS tab.
    8. Remove each DNS server address listed:
      1. From the DNS Server Addresses in Order of Use list, select a server address.
      2. Click the Remove button.
    9. Select the WINS tab.
    10. Remove each WINS address listed:
      1. From the WINS Addresses in Order of Use list, select an address.
      2. Click the Remove button.
    11. Click OK.
    12. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
    13. In the Virginia Tech Modem Pool Properties window, click OK.
    14. Restart your computer.
  4. Connect to the modem pool:
    1. On your desktop, double-click the Virginia Tech Modem Pool icon.
    2. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
    3. In the Password text box, type your PID password.
    4. Click the Dial button.
