How do I set up a static IP address in Mac OS X v10.4/10.5?

To complete these instructions, you must log on to your computer with an account with computer administrator privileges.
These instructions are for faculty and staff only. You need to contact your network liaison to obtain an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. To look up your network liaison, refer to the Network Liaisons Web page (http://rdweb.cns.vt.edu/public/info/network-liaisons.html).
To set up your static IP address:
From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
Click the Network icon.
Configure your network settings.
In Mac OS X v10.5:
Select Ethernet.
From the Configure drop-down list, select Manually.
In Mac OS X v10.4:
Select Built-in Ethernet.
Click the Configure button.
Select the TCP/IP tab.
From the Configure IPv4 drop-down list, select Manually.
In the IP Address text box, type your IP address.
In the Subnet Mask text box, type your subnet mask.
Note: If you are a student, your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
In the Router text box, type your default gateway.
Note: If you are a student, your default gateway is your IP address with a 1 in the last section of the IP address.
Example: If your IP address is 198.82.240.70, your gateway will be 198.82.240.1
Set your DNS Server Search Order.
If your residence hall or office is located south of the drillfield and your computer does not belong to a domain:
In the DNS Servers text box, type: 198.82.247.66
Press the Return key.
Type: 198.82.247.34
