How do I configure a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to connect to the Virginia Tech Network via Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) in Windows 2000?

Answer:

Notes:
  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and then select Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Select the Connect to a Private Network Through the Internet option.
  5. Click Next.
  6. If the Public Network window opens:
    1. Select the Do Not Dial the Initial Connection option.
    2. Click Next.
  7. In the Host Name or IP Address text box, type: pptp.cns.vt.edu
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the For All Users option.
  10. Click Next.
  11. In the Type the Name You Want to Use For This Connection text box, type: VT PPTP VPN
  12. Click Finish. The VT PPTP VPN window will open.
  13. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
  14. In the Password text box, type your Remote Access Passphrase.
  15. Click the Properties button.
  16. Select the Security tab.
  17. Select the Advanced option.
  18. Click the Settings button.
  19. From the Data Encryption drop-down list, select Optional Encryption.
  20. Place a check in the Microsoft CHAP check box.
  21. Place a check in the Microsoft CHAP Version 2 check box.
  22. Click OK.
  23. Select the Networking tab.
  24. From the Type of VPN drop-down list, select PPTP VPN.
  25. Click OK.
  26. Click Cancel.
  27. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then select Network and Dial-up Connections.
  28. Right-click VT PPTP VPN, and select Create Shortcut.
  29. To place the shortcut on your desktop, click the Yes button.
  30. To use your VPN connection, double-click the shortcut on your desktop. Log on with your PID and Remote Access Passphrase.
