How do I configure a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to connect to the Virginia Tech Network via Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) in Windows XP?

To configure a VPN connection:

  1. Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
    Note: Skip this step when in category view.
  3. Click the Network Connections link.
    Note: This step will appear as an icon when in category view.
  4. Click the Create a New Connection link.
    Note: Alternately, this step will be the "New Connection Wizard" icon.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the Connect to the Network at My Workplace option.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select the Virtual Private Network Connection option.
  9. Click Next.
  10. In the Company Name text box, type: PPTP VT VPN
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click "Do not dial the initial connection."
  13. Click Next.
  14. In the Host Name or IP Address text box, type: pptp.cns.vt.edu
  15. Click Next.
  16. Select who you would like to be able to use the connection.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Click Finish.
  19. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
  20. In the Password text box, type your Remote Access Passphrase.
  21. Click the Properties button.
  22. Select the Security tab.
  23. Select the Advanced (Custom Settings) option.
  24. Click the Settings button.
  25. From the Data Encryption drop-down list, select Optional Encryption.
  26. Place a check in the Microsoft CHAP check box.
  27. Place a check in the Microsoft CHAP Version 2 check box.
  28. Click OK.
  29. Select the Networking tab.
  30. From the Type of VPN drop-down list, select PPTP VPN.
  31. Click OK.
  32. Click Cancel.
  33. If you want a shortcut on your desktop, click the Start button, select Connect To, right-click PPTP VT VPN, and then drag it to your desktop.
  34. Select Create Shortcuts Here.
  35. To use your VPN connection, double-click the shortcut on your desktop. Log on with your PID and Remote Access Passphrase.
