How do I set up a Virginia Tech wireless network connection in Windows 2000?

Important:

To set up a DHCP Wireless connection, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Network and Dial-up Connections.
  4. Right-click your Wireless Network Connection, and select Properties.
  5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Click the Properties button.
  7. Select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.
  8. Select the Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically option.
  9. Click the Advanced button.
  10. Select the DNS tab.
  11. Clear the Register This Connection's Addresses in DNS check box.
  12. Select the WINS tab.
  13. Select the Use NetBIOS Setting from the DHCP Server option.
  14. Click OK.
  15. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
  16. In your Connection's Properties window, click OK.
  17. To access the VT wireless network:
    1. Verify that the signal icon on your taskbar is getting a signal.
    2. Open your Web browser.
    3. Go to the Virginia Tech homepage (http://www.vt.edu/). You will be redirected to a network confirmation screen.
    4. In the PID text box, type your PID.
    5. In the Password text box, type your password.
    6. Click the Log In button.
      Note: If your wireless network connection does not work, you may need to manually enter a network name. This setting is entered in your wireless card's configuration and varies by manufacturer. In many cases, you can do the following:
      1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then select Network and Dial-up Connections.
      2. Right-click your Wireless Connection, and select Properties.
      3. Click the Configure button.
      4. Select the Advanced tab.
      5. From the Property list, select SSID or ESSID.
      6. In the Value text box, type: VT_WLAN
      7. Click OK.
      8. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, click OK.
