To configure Windows 2000 to connect to the modem pool:

  1. Verify that your modem is installed:
    1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then select Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon.
    3. Select the Modems tab.
    4. In the The Following Modems Are Installed list, locate your modem.
      Note: If you do not have a modem installed, contact your computer's manufacturer for installation instructions.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Close the Control Panel window.
  2. Configure your modem pool connection:
    1. Click the Start button, select Settings, select Network and Dial-up Connections, and then select Make New Connection.
      Note: If the Location Information window opens:
      1. From the Country/Region drop-down list, select your country/region.
      2. In the Area Code text box, type your area code.
      3. In the Text Box, type the number you use to access an outside line.
      4. Select the Tone Dialing or Pulse Dialing option.
      5. Click OK.
        Note: If you have call waiting enabled on your phone line:
        1. Click the Edit button.
        2. Select the General tab.
        3. Place a check in the To Disable Call Waiting, Dial check box.
        4. From the drop-down list, select *70.
        5. Click OK.
      6. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK.
    2. Click Next.
    3. Select the Dial-up to Private Network option.
    4. Click Next.
      Note: If you have more than one modem installed, Windows will prompt you to select the one you want to use:
      1. Place a check in the check box beside the modem you want to use.
      2. Click Next.
    5. In the Phone Number text box, type: 2327000
    6. Click Next.
    7. Select the option for whom you want to create the connection.
    8. Click Next.
    9. In the Type the Name You Want To Use for This Connection text box, type: Virginia Tech Modem Pool
    10. Place a check in the Add a Shortcut to My Desktop check box.
    11. Click Finish.
    12. In the Connect Virginia Tech Modem Pool window, click Cancel.
    13. Restart your computer.
  3. Configure TCP/IP:
    1. Click the Start button, select Settings, select Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click Virginia Tech Modem Pool, and select Properties.
    2. Select the Networking tab.
    3. From the Components Checked Are Used by This Connection list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
      Note: If Internet Protocol TCP/IP is not listed, you must install it:
      1. Click the Install button.
      2. From the Click the Type of Network Component You Want to Install list, select Protocol.
      3. Click the Add button.
      4. From the Network Protocol list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
      5. Click OK.
      6. To restart your computer, click the Yes button.
      7. After your computer has restarted, click the Start button, select Settings, and then select Network and Dial-up Connections.
      8. Right-click the Virginia Tech Modem Pool icon.
      9. Click the Properties button.
      10. Select the Networking tab.
      11. From the Components Checked Are Used by This Connection list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
    4. Click the Properties button.
    5. Select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.
    6. Click the Advanced button.
    7. Select the DNS tab.
    8. Remove each DNS server address listed:
      1. From the DNS Server Addresses in Order of Use list, select a server address.
      2. Click the Remove button.
    9. Select the WINS tab.
    10. Remove each WINS server address listed:
      1. From the WINS Addresses in Order of Use list, select an address.
      2. Click the Remove button.
    11. Click OK.
    12. In the Internet Protocols (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
    13. In the Virginia Tech Modem Pool window, click OK.
    14. Restart your computer.
  4. Connect to the modem pool:
    1. On your desktop, double-click the Virginia Tech Modem Pool icon.
    2. In the User Name text box, type your PID.
    3. In the Password text box, type your PID password.
    4. Click the Dial button.
