How do I set up a static IP address in Windows XP?

Important:

To set up your static IP address:

  1. Click the Start button, and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
  3. Click the Network Connections link.
  4. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon, and select Properties.
    Note: If your Local Area Connection is not listed, you need to configure your Ethernet card. For assistance, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer's vendor for instructions.
  5. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP. If it is not listed, install TCP/IP. For detailed instructions, refer to Reinstalling TCP/IP in Windows XP (http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/desktop/vtkb2433.htm).
  6. Click the Properties button.
  7. Select the Use the Following IP Address option.
  8. In the IP Address text box, type your IP address.
  9. In the Subnet Mask text box, type your subnet mask.
    Note: If you are a student, your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
  10. In the Default Gateway text box, type your default gateway.
    Note: If you are a student, your default gateway is your IP address with a 1 in the last section of the IP address.
    Example: If your IP address is 198.82.240.70, your gateway will be 198.82.240.1
  11. Select the Use the Following DNS Server Addresses option.
  12. Set your DNS Server Search Order.
  13. Click the Advanced button.
  14. Select the WINS tab.
  15. Click the Add button.
  16. In the WINS Server text box, type: 198.82.162.243
  17. Click the Add button.
  18. Click the Add button.
  19. In the WINS Server text box, type: 198.82.162.242
  20. Click the Add button.
  21. Click OK.
  22. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, click OK.
  23. Click the Close button.
  24. Restart your computer.
