Question:

How do I enable the built-in junk e-mail filter in Outlook 2000/2002 for Windows 2000/XP?

Answer:

The best way to avoid unwanted e-mail (often known as spam) is to protect the privacy of your e-mail address. This article explains how to filter unwanted messages based on predefined keywords in the subject and body. These keywords were determined by Microsoft, and are separate from the Virginia Tech spam filtering system. For more information about techniques for handling unwanted messages, see the Unwanted E-mail at Virginia Tech page (http://www.computing.vt.edu/email_and_calendaring/vt_mail/unwantedemail.html).

Organize your Inbox to send junk e-mail messages to a separate folder. To do this:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Organize.
  2. Click the Junk E-mail link.
  3. In the first bulleted item, from the first drop-down list, select Move.
  4. From the second drop-down list, select Other Folder.
  5. Click the New button.
  6. In the Name text box, type: Junk Mail
  7. Click OK.
  8. From the Choose a Folder list, select Junk Mail.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click the Turn On button.
  11. Close the Ways to Organize Inbox window.
Important: Be sure to check the contents of your junk mail folder before deleting the e-mail messages. Legitimate e-mail messages could be marked as junk mail.
