How do I configure Outlook Express 6 for Windows 2000/XP to connect to the Virginia Tech Exchange server via IMAP?

Important:

To configure Outlook Express to connect to the Exchange server:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. If the Internet Connection Wizard starts, close it:
    1. Click Cancel.
    2. A dialog box will open and ask, "The new Internet account has not been created yet. Are you sure you want to exit the wizard?". Click the Yes button.
  3. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  4. Click the Add button, and select Mail.
  5. In the Display Name text box, type your name as you want it to appear in messages you send.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the E-mail Address text box, type: [Your Hokies ID]@exchange.vt.edu
    Note: Replace [Your Hokies ID] with your Hokies ID.
  8. Click Next.
  9. From the My Incoming Server Is a _____ Server drop-down list, select IMAP.
  10. In the Incoming Mail Server (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) text box, type: exsecure.vt.edu
  11. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
  12. Click Next.
  13. In the Account Name text box, type: hokies\[Your Hokies ID]
    Note: Replace [Your Hokies ID] with your Hokies ID.
  14. Clear the Remember Password check box.
    Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when logging on to Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.
  15. Click Next.
  16. Click Finish.
    Note: If you are asked if you want to import your mail, click the No button.
  17. From the list, select exsecure.vt.edu.
  18. Click the Properties button.
  19. Select the Advanced tab.
  20. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) text box, type: 465.
  21. In the Outgoing mail section, place a check in the This Server Requires a Secure Connection (SSL) check box.
  22. In the Incoming Mail section, place a check in the This Server Requires a Secure Connnection (SSL) check box. The port number will change automatically.
  23. Select the Servers tab.
  24. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, place a check in the My Server Requires Authentication check box.
  25. Click Settings.
  26. Select Log on using.
  27. In the Account name text box, type your PID.
  28. Clear the Remember Password check box.
    Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when logging on to Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.
  29. Click OK.
  30. Click the Close button.
  31. If asked "Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added?", click the Yes button.
  32. In the Password text box, type your Hokies password.
  33. Click OK.
  34. Repeat the following steps for each folder you want to appear in your folder list:
    1. Select the name of the folder you want to appear in your folder list.
    2. Click the Show button.
    3. Click OK.
