How do I configure Outlook Express 6 for Windows to connect to the VT Mail server?

Answer:

To configure Outlook Express to connect to the VT Mail server:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. If the Internet Connection Wizard starts, close it.
    1. Click Cancel.
    2. A dialog box will open and ask, "The new Internet account has not been created yet. Are you sure you want to exit the wizard?". Click the Yes button.
  3. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  4. Click the Add button, and select Mail.
  5. In the Display Name text box, type your name as you want it to appear in messages you send.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the E-mail Address text box, type: [Your PID]@vt.edu
    Note: Replace [Your PID] with your PID.
  8. Click Next.
  9. From the My Incoming Mail Server Is a _____ Server drop-down list, select POP3.
  10. In the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server text box, type: pop.vt.edu
  11. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box, type: auth.smtp.vt.edu
  12. Click Next.
  13. In the Account Name text box, type your PID.
  14. Clear the Remember Password check box.
    Important: Clearing the Remember Password check box means you will be prompted to enter your password when checking mail in Outlook Express. This is recommended for security reasons.
  15. Click Next.
  16. Click Finish.
  17. In the Internet Accounts window, select the Mail tab.
  18. Select your VT Mail account.
  19. Click the Properties button.
  20. Select the Servers tab.
  21. Under the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the My server requires authentication check box.
  22. Click the Settings button.
  23. Make sure the Use same settings as my incoming mail server is checked.
  24. Click OK.
  25. Select the Advanced tab.
  26. Change the number in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box from "25" to "465".
  27. Under Outgoing mail (SMTP), place a check in the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box.
  28. Under Incoming Mail, place a check in the This Server Requires a Secure Connection (SSL) check box. The number in the Incoming Mail (POP3) text box will change from "110" to "995".
  29. Click OK.
  30. Click the Close button.
