Question:

How do I download, install, and configure Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 5.5.0.4 for Windows XP/2003/Vista?

Answer:

Important: These instructions are for a new installation of the TSM client. To upgrade to a newer version of the client, perform only steps 2, 3, and 6.

Important: If you are behind a firewall, Port 1500 must be opened in the firewall for the backup client to work. You must add the TSM server's IP address, 198.82.162.92, to your list of trusted IP addresses.
To download, install, and configure TSM 5.5.0.4:

  1. Contact Eliza Lau at lau@vt.edu to register your computer's nodename.
  2. Delete the folder c:\tsm_images\TSM_BA_client if it exists.
  3. Install the TSM Windows XP/Server 2003 backup-archive client.
    1. Log on to your computer with an account that has computer administrator privileges.
    2. Go to the Network Backup Service page (http://www.computing.vt.edu/security_and_viruses/network_backup/).
    3. Click the TSM Client Download for Windows link.
    4. Click the 5.5.0.4-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe link.
    5. Save the file to your desktop.
    6. On your desktop, double-click the 5.5.0.4-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe file. The TSM Install screen will appear.
    7. Click Next.
    8. From the Choose Setup Language drop-down list, select English.

    3. Save the file to the path C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\
    4. Open the file C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsm.opt.

Important: Make sure you open the dsm.opt file, not the dsm.opt.txt file.

    5. After the word NODENAME, type your computer's fully qualified nodename.

      Example: NODENAME abcd1234.vt.edu

    6. If you are using Windows Vista, change the following line from:

      domain all-local
      to

    14. Click the Backup button.
    15. Verify that the backup was successful.
