How do I download, install, and configure TSM 5.4/5.5 for Intel Mac OS?

Important:

To install and configure TSM:

  1. Contact Eliza Lau at lau@vt.edu to register your computer's nodename.
  2. Note: Computers using DHCP can use TSM for backups.
  3. Download and install Tivoli Storage Manager.
    1. Go to the Network Backup Service page (http://www.computing.vt.edu/security_and_viruses/network_backup/index.html).
    2. Click the TSM Client Download for Macintosh link for the 5.4 or 5.5 client.
    3. Click the 5.4.1.2-TIV-TSMBAC-Mac.dmg or 5.5.0.6-TIV-TSMBAC-Mac.dmg link. For any recent information, click on the other two files.
    4. Save the installer to your desktop.
    5. On your desktop, double-click the 5.4.1.2-TIV-TSMBAC-Mac.dmg or Tivoli Storage Manager.mpkg icon, if a welcome screen does not appear automatically.
    6. When presented with a welcome screen, click Continue.
      Note: Before clicking Continue, you may print or read the Release Form and ReadMe.
    7. You will be presented with the Select Destination window. If you only have one hard drive, that drive's name will be displayed.
    8. Click Continue.
    9. Note: Installation type defaults to Upgrade for a basic installion, or Easy Install. This is the recommended method and is the only one addressed here.
    10. To continue, click either Upgrade or Install (whichever is presented).
    11. Log on with your Mac OS username and password or phrase.
    12. When the Successful Installation message appears, click Close.
    13. Press the Red X button on the top left of the window to close the main Tivoli Storage Manager window.
  4. Log on to TSM and configure the Preferences files:
    Note: It is only necessary to configure the Preferences files during your first time using TSM.
    1. Click on the Applications folder.
    2. Click the Open the Tivoli Storage Manager folder.
    3. In the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, double-click the TSM Tools for Administrators.app icon.
      Note: This will launch the Tivoli Storage Manager and, initially, theTSM Client Configuration window.
    4. In the Authentication window, enter your Mac password.
    5. Verify that a dot appears in the Create a New Options File button.
    6. Click Next.
    7. In the TSM Server Name field, type adsm.
    8. Click Next.
    9. Accept the TCP/IP Selection for TSM Client/Server Communications by clicking Next.
    10. In the Server Address box, type liferaft.cc.vt.edu
      Note: Accept the default port 1500.
    11. Click Next.
    12. In the What Is the TSM Node Name to Use? text box, type the node name upon which you and Eliza Lau agreed.
    13. Click Next.
    14. To apply this configuration, in the Completing the TSM Client Configuration Wizard, Click Finish.
    15. Within the Macintosh HD\Library\Preferences\Tivoli Storage Manager folder, create a file named Include-Exclude.
    16. Go to Index of /~lau (http://filebox.vt.edu/~lau/).
    17. Click on the dsm.sys for Mac link.
    18. Copy all lines of text and paste them into the Include-Exclude file you just created.
    19. Save the file.
    20. From the menu bar in the Tivoli Storage Manager window, select Edit.
    21. Click Client Preferences.
      Note: You will be presented with a login box. The login box should have your node name and a password field.
    22. In the password field, type changeme
    23. Log on to TSM.
    24. In the Tivoli Storage Manager Window, select Edit
    25. Click Client Preferences.
      Note: This will bring up the TSM Preferences Editor.
    26. On the left menu bar, select Include-Exclude.
    27. On the right side of the Preferences Window, click the Add button.
      Note: The Define Include-Exclude Options window will pop up.
      1. From the Category pull down menu, select Include-Exclude File.
      2. From the Type pull down menu, select INCLEXCL.
      3. Browse for the Include-Exclude file you created or enter the file path in the File or Path field.
        Example: /Library/Prferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/Include-Exclude
      4. Click OK.
        Note: You should see a line similar to the following in the Statement list in the Preferences window: INCLEXCL"/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager/TSM-exclude"
      5. Click Apply.
      6. Click OK.
    28. From the left menu bar, select the Backup Preferences option.
      1. Place a check beside Compress Objects.
      2. Remove the check beside Continue Compressing If Object Grows.
      3. Verify that the backup type is Incremental.
      4. Verify that Back Up all Local File Systems has a check beside it.
      5. Click Apply.
      6. Click OK.
    29. From the left menu bar, select the Autorization Preferences option.
      1. Click the Password Generate button.
      2. Click Apply.
      3. Click OK.
      4. Click OK to apply all changes.
    30. Change your default TSM password and run a manual backup.
      1. From the top menu bar of the Tivoli Storage Manager Window, select Utilities.
      2. Click Change Password.
      3. Type changeme.
      4. When prompted, type your new password.
      5. Click OK.
      6. From the top menu bar of the Tivoli Storage Manager Window, select Actions.
      7. Click Backup.
      8. Place a check beside Local.
      9. Click Backup.
        Note: The initial Backup will take some time to complete.
    31. Set up the TSM Scheduler.
      1. Launch the TSM Tools for Administrators.app application.
      2. From the Application Request Window, select Start the Client Acceptor Daemon.
      3. Type your Mac password.
      4. When the information window pops up, click OK.
      Notes:
      • The process is now running in the background, and the TSM server will initiate the backup when it is time for your Mac to be backed up.
      • On some Macs, the TSM information window is flashing in the Dock. If this happens, click it and then you will be able to click OK to close the information window and run the TSM scheduler in the background.
