Important: Safe Mode may not load all of your startup services and background applications, including video and CD drivers. Do not operate in Safe Mode for an extended period of time, but rather use this function to fix malware and other software troubles that require limited services and processes.
To access Safe Mode and other startup options:
- Close any open programs.
- Restart your computer.
- While your computer is restarting, hold down the F8 key.
- Select a startup option.
- In Windows XP, use the up and down arrow keys to select one of the following options:
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode with Networking
- Safe Mode with Command Prompt
- Enable Boot Logging
- Enable VGA Mode
- Last Known Good Configuration
- Directory Services Restore Mode.
- Debugging Mode
- Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure
- Start Windows Normally
- Reboot
- Return to OS Choices Menu
- When prompted, select either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
- In Windows Vista, use the up and down arrow keys to select one of the following options:
- Safe Mode
